Which exercise should be your bread and butter?
There are so many “great” exercises TOA programs. How could we ever choose a “favorite”? ;-)
Well, let’s be honest, there are a lot of favorite exercises; but, in choosing one specifically, we look for: functionality, the most strength produced and the amount of muscular recruitment.
For this we choose the SIT-TO-STAND. Yes, I know it’s your favorite too. We love the 150 sit to stand test, it’s our favorite.
The sit-to-stand is our bread and butter at TOA. There is a version of it in almost every workout. This lift is by far the most functional. Let’s think about how, many times a day we sit down and stand up. For starters, you get out of bed and unless you’re a ninja and leaping up to start your day, you’re probably doing a sit-to-stand out of bed. Check, there’s one! Then you use the restroom, and maybe sit down to eat your breakfast, drink your coffee. Oh, wait you forgot the creamer and you’ve just stood up again. You can see how these add up all day long.
Next, we search for the most strength gain for the effort put into the lift. Again, the sit-to-stand wins. By utilizing our legs and the largest muscles on our bodies we can really load this lift heavy with the same amount of perceived exertion as those pesky shoulder raises (boo, not my favorite). With greater weight, we can stress (in a good way) our muscles more creating more tearing (good tearing) and therefore more muscular growth and strength!
Finally we are looking for a lift that recruits the most muscular involvement as possible. If you think about the sit-to-stand (and move to a loaded one!) you are looking at the majority of the body firing to make this lift happen. Obviously, you can see the legs involvement; but, what about the arms and shoulders holding the weight, how about the back stabilizing? The core contracting holding it all together? This really does involve most of the bodies muscle groups, a true full body lift!
So, as you can see the sit to stand is a clear winner when choosing our BEST lift to include when programming the workout. The lift you should focus on getting the most out of as it will give you the most back. The sit-to-stand our winner as the bread and butter of TOA.
Now get after it, we are looking at another 150 sit-to-stand test soon!
